Most of us will never forget about HBO’s Sex and the City. Lead character Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) was our New York City love affair of the 90s. She shared her story with the world through her witty and smart writing, much of it depicting the lives of herself and her three best friends – Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda.
If you’re anything like me, you were entranced by the somewhat eccentric lives of these New York women, and found a way to fall in love with Carrie and her fabulous lifestyle.
Where was Carrie before she made it to the big city? How did her life unfold? Who were her friends? What shaped her into the woman that we all know and love?
Luckily for us, now we can find out! Three weeks ago, The CW premiered the pilot episode of the prequel series The Carrie Diaries, depicting the story of Carrie’s youth played by AnnaSophia Robb. Even better, it’s actually a good show. The Monday night drama developed by Amy B. Harris is based on the book series by Candace Bushnell.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the pilot averaged 1.6 million viewers, which was actually less than what they projected. The series is still in limbo as to whether or not it will be renewed. Hopefully for Carrie fans, it will be.
The series kicks off when the Connecticut native Carrie gets an internship at a law firm in New York City where she meets Larissa - an exotic style editor at a popular NYC fashion magazine. Her story begins to unfold alongside those of her father Tom (Matt Letscher) and rebellious younger sister Dorrit (Stefania Owen) following the death of their mother.
The CW series exposes viewers to teenage life in early 80s. Carrie explores the world with her best friends – nerdy math geek Mouse (Ellen Wong), wild and crazy Maggie (Katie Findlay), and to truly tap into the SATC element, her closeted gay best friend Walt (Brendan Dooling).
And of course we get to meet Carrie’s first love interest Sebastian (Austin Butler); it wouldn’t be a CW drama without that bit.
Will the young and innocent Carrie Bradshaw live up to the mature, somewhat neurotic and fabulous Carrie Bradshaw we already know? The Carrie Diaries airs on the CW at 8pm Eastern.
