As students prepare to return to school after their summer break, those at Biloxi Junior High in Mississippi might find something looking a little different as they walk the corridors.
That’s because some of their teachers have been decorating lockers to make the hall look like a giant library.
Painting on the steel canvases of 189 lockers in the 8th grade English hallway has been time consuming, having begun late last year, but in the opinion of teacher Becky Howard:
“I think the kids are really going to enjoy it. When they come back and see this, they’re going to be like, ‘Wow, this is really neat.’”
Teacher Elizabeth Williams explained that:
“We thought well, wow, we can really make this hallway look good, and we can make the lockers look like book spines, but then it became much more than just a decoration process.”
Having posted a few pictures on Facebook to drum up help and support, the teachers then found the project that was perfect for what they envisioned. It was funded thanks to a $600 grant through Biloxi First as well as a good number of donations that they received due to huge social media attention.
Teacher Stacey Butera said of the interest in the project:
“People have been commenting on them, ‘What an amazing idea! Look how they’re bringing literature to life in Biloxi,’ and it’s just been amazing the response we’ve gotten.”
She also hopes that, as a result of the project, “…the students are going to be fascinated and try to read as well.”
