Tenet: Movie Review

Christopher Nolan has made his return to the big screen with his loudest movie yet.

It had been 3 years since Christopher Nolan blew everyone way with his war masterpiece Dunkirk and now he has made his loudest comeback yet with Tenet.

A CIA agent (John David Washington) participates in an undercover Russian operation to steal an unidentified object in Kyiv. After he gets kidnapped and tied up by a Russian terrorist, our protagonist bites on a suicide pill and enters a coma. After waking up our protagonist learns that the pill was fake and is recruited into a secret organisation and learns that technology has developed, time can be reversed and that actions can be undone.

To say this movie is head scratching is an understatement as sometimes it felt like there was no plot. Did Christopher Nolan wake up and decide “I am going to make a movie that is so loud and mind numbing that audiences won’t know what hit them”? It is shocking that the director and writer of this movie is the same man behind The Dark Knight and Dunkirk. It seems Nolan has taken a page out of Michael Bay’s book and decided to make another ridiculous Transformers movie without the transformers. Similar to Michael Bay, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet portrays its female characters as accessories to the male characters. John David Washington is so bland in the lead role that his character does not actually get a name. Robert Pattinson delivers in his supporting role however his talents are highly underused and his character shows no development. Elizabeth Debecki looks bored to say the least as her talents are also underused due to Nolan’s lazy direction. The cinematography is very appealing and give the movie a unique feel even though there is indication on what the movie is trying to portray. The score is fantastic, Ludwig Goransson really created an impact in the scenes where there is more noise than actual score used. To sum it all up, Tenet is a mind numbing , messy and time consuming disaster that will make you want to reverse time and undo the action of paying for a ticket.
