Liam Neeson isn’t just going to be listening to Watergate tapes at the White House (Mark Felt (2017)), he’s back in action again in a new thriller that recently dropped its first trailer: The Commuter (2018). While the title itself doesn’t sound too exciting, the trailer is anything but boring.

From Lionsgate, Liam Neeson will star as Michael Woolrich, an everyday businessman who before he knows it, thanks to a mysterious woman named Joanna (Vera Farmiga), becomes involved in psychological and nefarious circumstances on his daily train commute to and from the office.

Neeson, Serra, and thrillers seem to be a recipe for success

Upon first glance of the trailer, one might immediately think of Non-Stop (2014), another palpitating ride in which Liam Neeson plays an air marshal on a hijacked plane. Right about when you have this thought, you’ll soon see that the director of The Commuter is none other than that director of Non-Stop, Jaume-Collet Serra, who also directed last year’s Blake Lively vs. shark drama The Shallows (2016). You could say that The Commuter almost looks like Non-Stop on a train, or Taken (2008) on a train, but hopefully there will be enough of a difference to keep audiences interested and caught unawares. Director Serra must have a strong rapport with Liam Neeson, as this film will be their fourth partnership together (their first being Unknown (2011)).

All this writer knows is that he’ll see anything with Liam Neeson in it. If Non-Stop and The Shallows are any indication of what we might get in The Commuter, which they should be, then we can certainly expect some intense, nail-biting suspense and intrigue. We without a doubt should not be getting a “train wreck…”

The Commuter will star Liam Neeson (The Grey (2011)), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air (2009)), Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring (2013)), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park (1993)), and Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey (2010-15)), and hits cinema tracks early next year on January 12, 2018.
