According to a report by Variety, New Line Cinema is currently in the process of writing a script for a third installment, titled The Conjuring 3, of the popular horror franchise based on the real-life case files of paranormal researchers Lorraine and Ed Warren.
On board to write the script for the upcoming film is David Leslie Johnson, who wrote the script for the franchise's previous installment The Conjuring 2, which released to box office success last year.
In addition to the previous Conjuring installment, Johnson has also worked on the scripts for the horror film Orphan, four episodes of AMC's The Walking Dead, and the upcoming superhero flick Aquaman.
Also on board to produce the upcoming film is James Wan, who served as executive producer on The Conjuring 2, six Saw films, and even Annabelle, another addition to The Conjuring franchise. Wan will produce via his production company Atomic Monster. Peter Safran, a producer both of the first two Conjuring films will also return to produce alongside Wan.
The Conjuring 3 is expected to be another box office hit, as both The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 grossed a combined worldwide total of $638.3 million, while the related film Annabelle pulled in $256.9 million globally as well. Altogether, The Conjuring franchise has grossed over $895 million.
There's even more to come out of The Conjuring franchise in the coming years, as three spinoff films have also been announced.
Annabelle: Creation, a prequel to Annabelle which reveals how the demonic doll first came into being, is set for release on August 11 later this year, The Nun, a film featuring a demonically possessed woman of the cloth, is slated for July 2018, and lastly, The Crooked Man, based on the horrifically evil character from The Conjuring 2, has also been announced, though it has yet to receive a release date.
