This year, Cannes Film festival kicks off May 15th with the film adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book, The Great Gatsby, opening the annual event. The film’s lead star, Leonardo DiCaprio reunites with director Baz Luhrmann, 17 years after the 1996 remake of Romeo and Juliet.
The Great Gatsby is a rather different choice compared to last year’s more subtle Moonrise Kingdom. Set during the ‘roaring 20’s’ in America, DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby a mysterious, yet wealthy character who throws lavish parties to get the attention of his (now-married) former lover, Daisy (Carey Mulligan) who lives across the way from him. This is the basic plot; there is more to this story than you may think…
In the press release for the announcement, Luhrmann said "It is a great honor for all those who have worked on The Great Gatsby to open the Cannes Film Festival… F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside Saint-Raphaël.”
Watch the trailer to The Great Gatsby below:
The Great Gatsby will be screened in 3D to truly capture the magic of the silver screen, the film is released five days prior to Cannes at the 10th May in the US and a week later, 17th May (UK).
Are you excited to see Leonardo DiCaprio and Baz Luhrmann working together again? - I am, the glitz & glamour visible in the trailer is enough to make me dig out some tools and attempt to build a time machine!!
With some of Hollywood’s elite attending the festival, do you expect to see some 1920’s inspiration in the form of attire? We sure hope so!
Cannes Film Festival opens 15th May and closes 26th May 2013.
