It’s not very hard to imagine a world like the one depicted in Hulu’s hit series The Handmaid’s Tale, and, given the state of things, it’s also not hard to wonder if our world is currently making a descent into the strict and fiercely refined culture. Thanks to a recent Emmy campaign for the show, things had us looking twice and believing that the wrath of the Eyes was bearing down on us much faster than anticipated.
On Monday, June 12, Hulu sent a group of women clad in red gowns and white bonnets into the streets of West Hollywood in a “For Your Consideration” Emmy campaign. The women never broke character, walking in pairs and even going so far as pointing their fingers and shaming a man like the handmaids have done in the series. For their part, residents captured the event on their phones and were quick to take to social media.
Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel about a dystopian future in which fertile women are confined to a strict life where their sole purpose is to bear children to high-ranking officials and their wives, The Handmaid’s Tale has quickly gained popularity. It’s become a focal point in discussions about human rights violations and sexism in world cultures, and the buzz around the show has made it a major contender for an Emmy. Hulu’s campaign for it sure was creative and managed to generate more talk.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 1 finale premieres this Wednesday.
