Headed for Vegas but end up on a damaged Russian submarine sinking down into the depths of the ocean, filled with nuclear missiles and an alien that escaped from a block of Arctic Ice? Sounds about on par for the course with any Doctor adventure.
In “Cold War” we see the return of one of the Classic Doctor Who aliens, the Ice Warriors. This episode, penned by Mark Gatiss, was a hard fought battle, as he had to convince Moffat that the Ice Warriors were indeed a force to be reckoned with, since he believed them to be a “boring, rubbish alien”. In the end, Moffat agreed with Gatiss, and the Ice Warriors are once again featured in Doctor Who.
This entire episode takes place on a submarine, and was filmed on an actual submarine as well. It proved to be a bit of a challenge for the lanky 5’11” Smith, but he didn’t let it stop him from enjoying filming the episode. In a quote to the BBC he states, “They built a submarine and the five-year old in me was like ‘yeah it’s a submarine!’ I loved getting sprayed down at the beginning of the shoot. It wasn’t a chore as it does so much of the acting for you, making it really authentic. Mark Gatiss has delivered one of the best episodes of the series.”
“Cold War” airs on Saturday, April 13th on BBC One at 6pm and BBC America at 7pm.
