From Noah Baumbach, the director of Kicking & Screaming (1995) and one of the writers of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), comes the comedy drama, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017) with Adam Sandler and a whole bevy of stars, and Netflix’s first trailer for it has recently premiered!

The Meyerowitz Stories centers on a dysfunctional family who reunite to celebrate their father being recognized at an event for his artistic talents. While the trailer certainly looks like it has its many funny moments, there are obviously some more serious elements present to be sure, especially for Adam Sandler, who has not really had a dramatic role in years, maybe since parts of Spanglish (2004) or Punch-Drunk Love (2002).

It will undoubtedly be refreshing after Sandler’s recent Netflix projects like Sandy Wexler (2017) and The Ridiculous 6 (2015), which were not exactly well-received by audience subscribers. Just under a minute in length, this teaser trailer is not long, but we do get to see some of the fun but mostly chaotic and butting head times of this family while hearing Adam Sandler as Danny at the piano, singing with his dad Dustin Hoffman as Harold.

Despite coming to Netflix, this one might be more fun to check out in its limited theater engagement, considering some of the cast and crew and creators involved. As evidenced in the teaser, it was recognized by the New York Film Festival and already receiving high critic quotes of praise. Of course, we may get stronger opinions later on as more, longer previews for the film drop, which should not be too long from now considering the film opens in less than two months. Unlike many other other Netflix movies, The Meyerowitz Stories will actually be feature-length at 1 hour and 50 minutes in duration (not all, but many straight-to-Netflix movies seem to be around 80-90 minutes).

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) will star Adam Sandler (50 First Dates (2004)), Ben Stiller (Zoolander (2001)), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks (2013)), Grace Van Patten (The Sopranos (1999-2007)), Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man (1988)), and Elizabeth Marvel (True Grit (2010)), and comes to Netflix and select theaters on October 13, 2017.
