The Laurence Olivier Awards, honouring the best of London’s West End, were held last night (Sunday 28 April), hosted by previous winner Sheridan Smith and Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville. Following the Covent Garden Piazza celebration, the award ceremony itself featured stellar performances from two of Glee and Broadway’s best, Matthew Morrison and Idina Menzel, as well as Busted’s James Bourne (creator of Loserville), Michael Ball, and the casts of Cabaret, A Chorus Line and Top Hat. A specially commissioned performance from Cats closed the show, in tribute to Gillian Lynn, winner of the Special Award. The big winner of the evening, however, was undoubtedly The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, winning a record seven awards, equally last year’s haul by Matilda The Musical, but becoming the most celebrated play in Olivier history! Helen Mirren was also honoured with the Best Actress award as she once again played the role of the Queen, which has previously won her an Oscar and a Bafta, in The Audience.
