There’s a rather familiar saying: “music is therapy.” While many of us might agree with such a statement, for Will Sandnes of The United Skies, it holds absolute truth. As a recovering drug addict, in order to find strength to overcome his addiction, he turned to music; and subsequently turned his desire for something harmful into something beautiful and deserving of being shared with others.
His music, an unmistakable blend of eclectic and indie instrumentation and rhythm, together with raw and at times heartbreakingly honest lyrics, sets him some way ahead of many of his artistic counter-parts alongside whom he prides himself on delivering the best music he can to fans around the world.
His latest track “Dreams” is an emotive song, sure to linger in the minds of those who hear it thanks to lyrics including: “I wanna go back to 03, when I wasn’t so lonely and my mistakes didn’t own me.”
Of how and why he wrote the track Will says:
I wrote “Dreams” during a dark part of my life. The loss of my best friend had shaken my whole world, and in response I lost myself for years trying to numb the pain. “Dreams” was written during an awakening, realizing I had wasted so much time, set aside my dreams and ambitions, but at the same time learned so much through the process. I guess that’s what life is about and dreams in an ode to that.
Directed by Nikolai Vanyo, the video sees Will looking out over the sea, walking alone along a sun-kissed beach and immersing himself in the blue water, almost as if he’s being reborn and washing away the darkness of the past.
