It’s pretty much been a week since Comic-Con happened and the sizzling cast of The Vampire Diaries made their appearance in Ballroom 20 to talk about the next season. I imagine a lot of you are going through withdrawals, but don’t fret! New details are surfacing and in an interview with Digital Spy, Ian Somerhalder had some things to say about the upcoming season
When asked about the romance between Damon and Elena, or what fans refer to as Delena, fans shouldn’t expect smooth sailing. After four seasons of being caught in a tension filled love triangle with the Salvatore brothers, Elena (Nina Dobrev) finally declared her love for Damon (Somerhalder). “I think you always have to be cognizant of the fact that it’s The Vampire Diaries and you can’t remain happy for too long in any one given scenario, because then there’s no conflict,” Somerhalder said. Stefan (Paul Wesley) is out of the picture for now, so will something else get in the way? Either way, Ian did point out that “it is cute to see them in their interactions together”.
It’s no secret that Damon is the bad boy of the bunch, but Elena has calmed him down a bit. “Damon’s just smitten. He’s in love, and it’s cute, you know?” Ian gushed. It’s cute alright, but a lot of people miss the tortured bad boy, and Ian hinted that we’ll still see him around.
As mentioned earlier, Stefan is gone for the time being, so he won’t be around to create tension with his brother and ex. However, Ian did mention that Silas, Stefan’s doppelganger, will “change the dynamic of the whole show”. Sounds like we’ll be seeing something new and how the characters will react to this new guy who looks like their former friend.
Ian also mentioned that Season 5 will be going back to the basics. “We were shooting the stories - they were like little movies every week. We’re going back to that.” We can also expect to see the tone of the show go back to being dark as opposed to bright and sunny – sounds like there’s going to be a lot of brooding and evil is going to be running amuck. I like it.
And while one Gilbert goes off to college, another moves in with Damon. Jeremy (Steven McQueen) and Damon will be hanging out a lot together. “It’s the boys! He’s 18, Damon’s 172, you know what I mean? There’s a good mix of demographics there.” Can’t wait to see how that relationship will work out.
Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries will premiere on October 10 at 8pm ET and I can’t wait to see how all the characters react to all the changes that we saw in the season 4 finale!
