The Video Game Market Goes Back To Its Roots With Ultima Release

Jeremy Chai

Brace yourselves, old school fans. The legendary Ultima series has made its return to the video game market.

Digital Spy reports Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar has been released for iOS devices. It’s free-to-play too, meaning anyone with an iPad or iPhone can sit down and join in the fun the moment they log into the App Store.

The game is considered a sequel to the 1985 RPG classic Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, taking place 20 years after the events of Quest of the Avatar’s story. The game revolves around the player protecting the world of Brittania from the plague known as the Black Weep.

For those who don’t know, the Ultima series is important because it left a legacy in how modern video games are played. Many of its game-play mechanics have been reproduced in the video games you and I play today. It helped standardize mechanics like party-based combat (seen in games like Dragon Age, the Fallout series, Neverwinter), strong narratives, and a morality system, quite similar to the good/neutral/evil system in Dungeons and Dragons games. They even helped revolutionize MMORPG`s with the release of Ultima Online.

With such a high bar to reach, it’s going to be quite the feat to meet the expectations of fans. You can play the game here, exclusively on iOS devices.
