Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson Reveals That Her Character Valkyrie Is Bisexual

Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson has revealed that her character in the movie, Valkyrie, is bisexual!

Thor: Ragnarok ‘s Tessa Thompson has revealed that her character Valkyrie is bisexual! This makes the Norse-based superhero, the first confirmed major LGBTQ movie character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although in the larger interconnected Marvel franchise the first LGBTQ hero shown was from the television series Agents of Shield. Joey Gutierrez played by Juan Pablo Raba is an Inhuman on the show with the ability to manipulate metal. He was later recruited into Daisy Johnson’s team of super powered humans called, The Secret Warriors.

It is a much bigger deal when something like this makes it to the big screen. Especially when the MCU is known for its lack of diversity, but then again that is slowly changing, as they have introduced more female and superheroes of color.

Tessa Thompson made the revelation in her personal twitter account when she responded to a fan by writing, “She’s bi. And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play!”

What makes the tweet even more interesting is that it was done as a rebuke towards another fan who referred to the film version of Valkyrie as a “sexless marvel tomboy” compared to her comic book counterpart. It was then that twitter user @oresteian responded saying that “Valkyrie in the comics is a big ole lesbian so I doubt she would give your opinion any thought.”

And it is to this tweet that Thompson answered, confirming her character’s bisexuality. Although while the actress saying that her character is bisexual is great, there may be little or no hint of this in the movie. It may just be another Power Ranger Trini moment.

Thor: Ragnarok will open in cinemas on November 2, 2017.
