Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World is predicted to claim the number 1 spot this weekend in the US box office.
Thor: The Dark World opened with huge numbers in the United Kingdom with £8.65 million on opening night and £5.54 million over its first weekend. The film has made $109.4 million worldwide, debuting at number 1 in 36 countries including France, Spain, and Germany. While those numbers don’t beat what Marvel’s Iron Man 3 raked in earlier this year ($198.4 million from 42 countries), the overseas debut is higher than what the 2011 original made.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, tracking numbers are predicting that the film could gross $75 million here in the US. With the debut doing so well overseas, that number could raise those numbers even higher.
Although the film is expected rake in huge numbers in the box office this weekend, there are mixed reviews from critics:
“An inelegant misfire, this is a chink in Marvel’s otherwise solid armor.” – Kate Erbland, Film.com
“It is here mostly to make you laugh, against the backdrop of a yet another Battle To Save The Universe. In this, it succeeds, handily.” –Will Leitch, Deadspin
“Perhaps at this point, even diehards may wish for something more from a Marvel equation that often subtracts humanity.” –Jake Coyle, Associated Press
The sci-fi film Ender’s Game topped the US Box office this past weekend, and although considered a success, the film only picked up a worldwide total of $37.1 million in its opening weekend.
