So while we were fast asleep last night it seems the Internet sleuths were awake and kicking & discovered the trailer for Kristen Wiig’s upcoming film “Imogene” (now titled “Girl Most Likely”) seems to have travelled around. One of this year’s most eagerly awaited romantic comedies, it also boasts an all-star cast fincluding Annette Bening (American Beauty, The Kids Are Alright), Matt Dillion (There’s Something About Mary), and in his movie debut, Darren Criss (Glee).
Posted February 26th by Diamond Films Latam, we’re not sure if this trailer was ever supposed to see the light of day. Perhaps they were going to use if for promotional purposes around the time the film was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The almost 3 minute trailer doesn’t really show anything that fans of the film don’t already know, though the first glimpse of Criss singing “Everybody (Backstreets Back)” was worth it for me.
About “Girl Most Likely”
Following a staged suicide attempt in a bid to get her ex-boyfriend back, Imogene (Wiig) ends up in the custody of her estranged gambling addict mum, Zelda (Bening) and moves from the bright lights of Manhattan back to the Jersey Shore. There she has to deal with her family, including her brother (Christopher Fitzgerald), her mum’s new boyfriend, George Bousche (Dillion) and the cute new lodger who has taken over her room (Criss). Together they help Imogene get her life back on track and find her place in the world.
Though met with mixed reviews from its TIFF screenings, fans of both Wiig and Criss have been looking forward to the film’s release since photos from the set emerged in summer 2011 and expectation is high that this will translate to a modest box office return, though unlikely to be in the same ballpark as Bridesmaids.
Having seen the film at TIFF, I (Tarra) think that the trailer shows the film people are expecting to see given the publicly released information but the film I saw was more than that. There is a twist to the story that really isn’t alluded to at all in the trailer. PLUS it’s more a dark comedy than that trailer has it appear.
Girl Most Likely has a limited US release July 19 and a UK release July 26.
