Since 2008 The Marvel Cinematic Universe has ruled the big screen, so when Disney launched its own streaming service Disney+ there was no question we would be getting extensive Marvel content. WandaVision is the first of many new shows based in the MCU for Disney+. With Loki and Falcon & Winter Soldier still to released this is the start of a brand new era for Marvel. Kevin Feige has set out to take over this transition and he is showing promise with this new adventure. If you have not seen WandaVision yet there are spoilers ahead.
Episode 1:
Newlyweds Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) move into the town of Westview in what appears to be the 1950s. Wanda and Vision are attempting to fit in with the other civilians despite Wanda having telekinetic powers and Vision being an android. Whilst checking the calendar placed on the wall of their new home. They notice there is a heart drawn over the date, however that heart does not bare importance in either of their minds. Whilst Vision goes to his job at Computational Services Inc, Wanda decides that today must be their anniversary. Their neighbour Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) introduces herself to Wanda and decides to help her set up for their so called “anniversary”. Whilst at work Vision impresses his co-workers with his speed but does not know what the company actually does. Vision’s boss Mr. Hart reminds him that they are hosting him and his wife for dinner that night. Vision assumes this is what the heart on the calendar must mean. Whilst making dinner that night, Wanda and Vision struggle to hide their powers from the dinner guests. During the dinner, Wanda and Vision are asked where they came from and when they got married but neither one can answer the question. Mr. Hart pushes for an answer and then chokes on his food. Whilst Mr. Hart is choking, his wife keeps repeating the words “help him” which then forces Vision to use his powers to save Mr. Hart. After they leave Wanda and Vision sit down on the couch after a tumultuous evening and all of these events are being watched by someone on a television.
Episode 2:
During what appears to be the 1960s, Wanda and Vision hear strange noises coming from outside their window and use their powers to stop it. The next day, Wanda and Vision are preparing a magic act for a neighbourhood talent show. Wanda hears a noise out in her front yard and finds a technicolour helicopter in the shrubs. Wanda and Agnes decide to spend their day with Dottie (Emma Caulfield Ford) and the other housewives of the neighbourhood whilst Vision attends a neighbourhood watch meeting. Vision forms a friendship with these men and they give him some Big Red Gum. Whilst having a conversation with Dottie, a radio frequency comes through and the words “Who’s doing this to you Wanda?” come through. When Vision arrives at the talent show he appears intoxicated and reveals his powers to the whole neighbourhood. This leads Wanda to use her own abilities to make it appear that this is all one big magic trick. This goes down a treat with the whole neighbourhood and they return home happy. Whilst a baby bump is revealed, Wanda and Vision hear a strange noise outside. They run out to see a mysterious figure in a beekeeping costume, which leads to a reset to the scene before and everything changes to technicolour bringing us into the 1970s.
What’s the Vision?
The first episode sets up the series nicely, bringing us into this word we are not familiar with. The first episode is very much an homage to I Love Lucy and starts off as a classic situational comedy with the characters mimicking those of 1950s sitcoms. The second episode still plays into that classic sitcom format however this time paying homage to Bewitched which works with Wanda’s powers of telekinesis. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany adapt to their new surroundings as Wanda and Vision which is a major transition from how we are used to seeing them. Overall, the series shows promise and the story should become clearer as the show goes on.
Episodes 1 & 2 of WandaVision are available to stream on Disney+. Episodes 3 & 4 will be streaming on January 22nd.
