The last three weeks have been eventful in a time where there are no events. WandaVision has completely taken over our tv screens and broadcasted its way into our hearts. Much like Kat Denning’s character Darcy, Marvel fans have been invested in the story of Wanda and Vision and what is really going on in Westview. This weeks episode revealed so much, opening the story up to a variety of possibilities. There will be spoilers, if you haven’t seen WandaVision as of yet.
Episode Five:
The episode opens with another sitcom style scene paying homage to Family Ties and Full House. This time, it is set in the 80s with Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) trying hard to get their crying babies to sleep. They put the twins in their cribs and Wanda attempts to use her powers to put them to sleep. This will not work and the babies are still crying. Wanda wonders why the twins won’t do what she wants and Vision comes back with two “binkies”. They give the “binkies” to the children, only for the twins to spit them back out in a hilarious sitcom motion. Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) comes in as she hears the twins crying and Vision changes to his human form.
Agnes says she is there to help, Vision begins to question Agnes in a panic and the mood changes. She asks Wanda, “Do you want me to take that again?”. Wanda looks at Vision confused and wonders what Agnes means. Agnes then asks, “Should we just take it from the top?”. Wanda looks at Vison and begins to casually laugh and says “let’s let Agnes give it a try”, returning back to the mood of a light-hearted sitcom. Vision begins to question what Agnes just said and Wanda acts as if nothing happened. Wanda reassures Vision that Agnes is just being neighbourly and everything is fine. The twins stop crying however they are not in their cribs, Wanda and Vision turn around and their now five year old twins are standing behind them.
Monica (Teyonah Parris) is lying on what appears to be a hospital bed within the S.W.O.R.D Response Base. She has just finished receiving a scan and is greeted by Jimmy (Randall Park) and Darcy (Kat Dennings). At the briefing, Director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) describes Wanda as the “principal victimizer” of what is happening in Westview. Jimmy begins to give a brief backstory on Wanda, he is then questioned by Director Hayward on Wanda’s morals referring to the events we saw in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Director Hayward begins to refer to Wanda as a terrorist which evokes Monica to defend her. To prove Monica wrong, Director Hayward presents security footage showing Wanda infiltrating S.W.O.R.D headquarters to retrieve Vision’s corpse.
Back in Westview, Tommy and Billy are washing a dog and hiding it from their mother. Wanda finds the dog and the boys ask if they can keep it. Vision walks in, sees Wanda holding the dog and says he has “a hunch someone might pop over”. Agnes enters the scene carrying a dog house and Vision is perplexed as to why she is carrying “exactly the item” they need. They decide to name the dog Sparky and Wanda uses her powers to summon a dog collar. Vision begins to question why Wanda didn’t make any effort to hide her powers from Agnes. The boys begin to ask their parents if they can keep the dog. Wanda answers saying they will be able to when they are ten years old. Tommy and Billy look at each other and age themselves up.
Back at the S.W.O.R.D Response Base, Monica is presenting Darcy with a way she can get back into Westview. Jimmy shows up with coffee asking for the latest update when Monica says she knows an aerospace engineer who could help her out. As Monica begins to text this engineer, Darcy informs her that there is no guarantee “the hex” will not erase her memory should she renter. Jimmy begins to question if Tommy and Billy are actual missing children but Monica corrects him by saying they are Wanda’s children. Darcy begins to say that everything, including the wardrobe in Westview is composed of solid matter. Monica theorises that Wanda could’ve taken out Thanos on her own had “the blip” not occurred, Jimmy counterargues that Captain Marvel came close to stopping Thanos. Darcy begins to ask a question about Captain Marvel and Monica changes the subject back to Wanda.
Monica refers back to Darcy’s earlier comment about the wardrobe in Westview and they head for the lab. She sees her “Geraldine” costume, takes Jimmy’s gun and begins to shoot it. The bullets bounce off the costume, Monica realises that this is not an illusion and Wanda is rewriting reality. Monica then suggests they send something in that requires no change. Back in Westview, Vision is setting up his “new” computer at his office. Vision is assisting Norm with his computer and opens an email from S.W.O.R.D. As everyone laughs this off, Vision’s looming suspicions return. Vision uses his mind powers and touches Norm’s temples, temporarily breaking him out of his sitcom persona. Norm begins to panic and utters the words “you have to stop her” ,”she’s in my head” and “make her stop”. He uses his powers again and Norm is returned to his sitcom persona.
Back at the house, Tommy, Billy and Wanda are playing with Sparky . The twins want to show their father the tricks Sparky can do and Wanda informs them he is at work. Billy and Tommy tell their mother it is Saturday, she informs them it is Monday and they reply to her saying, “this morning it was Saturday”. Wanda sits the boys down and assures them everything is okay. She is then questioned if she has a brother and tells them he is “far away”. Sparky hears something outside, a worried Wanda tells the boys to stay in the house whilst she checks it out. We then see a drone operated by Monica locate Wanda’s house. Monica sees Wanda and begins to talk to her using the drone. Wanda’s eyes turn red and Director Hayward demands they “take the shot” even though Monica believes the drone is not armed.
There is a breach and the S.W.O.R.D agents all rush outside. Wanda emerges from the energy field, carrying a damaged drone and throws it towards Director Hayward. With the return of her Sokovian accent, she warns them to stay out of her home. Monica tries to assure Wanda that she is not against her and is willing to help her. Wanda makes the armed agents turn their aim onto Director Hayward. Wanda renters Westview turning the energy field red.
Billy, Tommy and Wanda are all looking for Sparky and they encounter a mail man who assures the boys “your mom won’t let him get far”. Agnes emerges from rose bushes holding a wrapped up Sparky who has passed away. Wanda tries to comfort the boys and advises them not to age up. The boys urge their mother to fix this situation, as she can fix everything including the dead. The twins urge Wanda to bring Sparky back when Vision appears and comforts his children.
As Wanda is cleaning up, Vision comes into the kitchen looking very tense. Washing his hands, Vision informs Wanda of what happened at the office earlier in the episode. He begins to tell her she cannot control him the way she does everyone and everything. The sitcom credits begin to roll but the scene goes on, Wanda tries to avoid the conversation but Vision begins to breakdown what is going on around him. As they enter the living room, Vision changes to his synthezoid form, starts yelling and urges Wanda to stop lying to him. This causes Vision to levitate, Wanda does the same and attempts to reassure him this is all for them and she can handle it.
Vision demands to know what is outside of Westview and she informs him that he “doesn’t want to know”. In a panicked rage, he yells that he cannot remember his life before moving to Westview. Wanda is trying to calm him down however he keeps pushing her for answers. The doorbell rings and Wanda attempts to reassure him that she doesn’t know who is at the door. Wanda answers the door with a surprised look on her face. Back at the S.W.O.R.D Response Base, Darcy is rushing to see what is happening. Vision asks “who is this?” and we see “Pietro” (Evan Peters) standing in the doorway. Behind her screen Darcy asks the question “she recast Pietro?” however it seems Wanda does not recognise this version of Pietro.
A Very Special Episode Indeed
There is a lot to unpack about the whole series within this episode alone. As with every episode of WandaVision, we get a recap of what has happened in the series up until this point. In episodes three and four, Wanda said that Geraldine “had to rush home” after throwing her out of Westview. However in the current recap, Wanda says “she didn’t belong here” in response to Vision’s question of where Geraldine was. We obviously know Wanda can edit this universe but this may be something bigger affecting the “broadcast”.
We are led to believe that Wanda controls everyone and everything in this universe however this was challenged many times in this episode. The earliest example of this is when the twins won’t stop crying, in order to get them to sleep Wanda asks, “Why won’t you do what I want?”. Tommy and Billy are a part of Wanda that cannot be controlled and age themselves up on a whim. The twins may prove to be a bigger part of the series and may challenge Wanda in some way.
In the same scene, Agnes shows up after hearing the babies cry. Whilst Vision is panicking, she turns to Wanda and asks, “Do you want to take that from the top?” causing a slight disruption in the sitcom. Agnes is focusing all her attention on Tommy and Billy in this episode and may be after them in some way. The series is definitely alluding to her being Agatha Harkness, a witch from the comics. Her role is becoming slightly clearer and this may lead to her being a villain or an accomplice to a future villain. Agnes has also made many references to her husband Ralph so this may lead to him being Mephisto, another character from the comics.
A new and interesting trio is formed in this episode, Monica, Jimmy and Darcy become the focus of the outside world. This trio works and with Monica’s knowledge of Westview, this may lead to them teaming up with Wanda. Whilst discussing Wanda’s abilities to create a whole different reality, Jimmy mentions Captain Marvel. As we know Monica Rambeau is the daughter of Maria Rambeau who we met in Captain Marvel. Monica’s expression and changing of the subject could indicate some sort of issue she faced with Captain Marvel however that may be explained in another instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A question is posed by Jimmy, how could she bring Vision back without The Mind Stone? As we saw in Avengers: Infinity War, The Mind Stone was removed from Vision’s head resulting in his death. We see surveillance footage of Wanda breaking into S.W.O.R.D Headquarters to retrieve Vision’s body. This poses a new question, why was Vision’s body there? The footage may indicate some kind of experiment and Director Hayward may just be trying to retrieve Vision’s corpse.
The best moment in this episode occurs when Wanda exits Westview to warn the S.W.O.R.D agents to stay out of her “home”. This scene is interesting as one moment we see Wanda in her 80’s style sitcom outfit in Westview and outside of Westview she is in her iconic red outfit from Avengers: Endgame. Wanda’s Sokovian accent makes a big return outside of Westview and that will hopefully be explored in a future episode. As previously seen in episode three, the Sokovian accent comes out briefly but we now know she is supressing this in her sitcom reality.
In this scene, Wanda uses her powers to turn the aim of the armed S.W.O.R.D agents onto Director Hayward. This may imply that, Director Hayward is really the villain and is tempering with Wanda’s reality for his own selfish gain. Something Director Hayward brings up is that Wanda never received a superhero name. We all know she is Scarlet Witch and she may gain this title in a later episode.
The climax of the episode was the doorbell ringing and Wanda answering the door to “Pietro”. We have seen Evan Peters play the part of Peter Maximoff a.k.a Quiksilver in the X-Men franchise. This appearance has caused great speculation and has Marvel fans scratching their heads yet again. This could introduce a multiverse, bringing the X Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Evan Peters may actually not be playing his X-Men character and could have been sent in to somehow infiltrate Wanda’s reality. Like always, we will have to wait and see.
The series is shocking and exciting fans all around the world. Episode five provided “edge of my seat” drama with touching moments for those of us who love Wanda and Vision.
WandaVision is now streaming on Disney+. Episode six will be available to stream February 12th.
