Warner Bros. Planning Nightwing Movie

Warner Bros. is bringing Nightwing to the DC Extended Universe with a new live action film. ‘The Lego Batman’ director Chris McKay is set to direct.

Warner Bros. is planning another live-action DC superhero film centering around Nightwing. The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay is currently in negotiations to direct, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Writer Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) is penning the script. Although McKay has worked in the Batman universe before, Nightwing would be his first live-action feature.

Dick Grayson was the circus acrobat turned billionaire Bruce Wayne’s ward. Prior to venturing out on his own, Grayson was Batman’s sidekick Robin. Superman was actually the first to take up the mantle of Nightwing during his adventures in Kandor. Batman and Robin teamed up with the Nightwing Superman in World’s Finest #143. Later, when Grayson went solo, he choose the name Nightwing in tribute to Batman and Superman. Grayson (or any Robin incarnation) has yet to appear in any films from the DC Extended Universe. A Robin costume did appear in Batman v. Superman that indicated he has been killed by the Joker at this point in time. Whether this is Grayson, Jason Todd, or one of the other Robins was not revealed by director Zack Snyder.

With Wonder Woman and Justice League out this year and announcements for Nightwing and the all-female villain feature, Gotham City Sirens, it doesn’t sound like Warner Bros. is bothered by the poor reception of Suicide Squad and Batman v. Superman. Aquaman, The Batman, Shazam, and several other films are also in the pipeline for the DCEU.

While it could be years before this live-action Nightwing film actually hits theaters, it isn’t hard to imagine the potential for this film. If fans can put together an awesome web series featuring Nightwing, I can only hope for better with a bigger budget. If you haven’t seen the Nightwing series, check out the trailer below and get excited for the DCEU feature!
