Washington and Cheadle Could Make History At Emmy Awards

NULL

Dan Cash

Staff Writer

This year’s Emmy Awards could break the trend in a rather refreshing way as two black actors land series lead nominations.

Don Cheadle, the star of House of Lies has managed to secure an Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series whilst Scandal’sKerry Washington has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Alfre Woodard has also been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her role as Ousier in Steel Magnolias

As the only three black actors nominated for an acting Emmy this year, it is evident that white actors once again dominate the Emmy nominations.

However it is not to say that these actors have not been previously recognised for their talents. In fact, Cheadle was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award in his role in Hotel Rwanda and this year he won a Golden Globe Award for his role in House of Lies. Washington meanwhile has received previous award nominations for her roles in movies such as Ray, Save The Last Dance and, most recently, Django Unchained.

If both Washington and Cheadle win their categories this year, it will surely break ground and make history.

I wish them both the best of luck for this year’s awards ceremony which are being held on September 22.
