Having been compared to artists such as Post Malone and Miguel, Taiwanese-American weswes has earned himself considerable attention already, but looks set to earn a lot more with the release of his EP ‘down bad but upright’ this week, which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere. The collection of songs presents the listener with several slices of slices of authentic storytelling, all shared with a hint and expression of comedy.
Asked to describe the EP in terms of the inspiration behind it and the topics covered through its songs, wes says: “‘down bad but upright’ is an EP about the different types of love that one can experience. Some songs represent the infatuation one feels when first meeting someone of interest and how that initial attraction brings about uncertainty, excitement, fear of rejection, and the possibility of a real connection. All these emotions are so different and polarizing, yet you feel them together, all at once, but also at different stages. I wanted to explore this concept in ‘Kimchi Pasta’ (infatuated on rosecrans).”
Of For “Jose Cuervo” and “Rainforest”, he adds: “…it was more of a song about someone who’s been hurt before, who is wary of anyone new who comes into his/her life with a romantic interest. I’m basically saying that I wasn’t the one who broke your heart, but I am willing to heal those wounds if you’ll let me. I wanted to convey that some people, like me ‘cos I’m speaking from the first person in the song, just want to heal and have a soft spot for broken things. Once someone’s been hurt, they find it difficult to open up to anyone again, building walls as a defense mechanism. “Rainforest” is just a party – feel good song about the honeymoon phase of the relationship.”
weswes goes on: “Chris’ Anthem Mum” is also a party song but when you take a closer listen, it’s actually dedication to all the single mothers that raise their children on their own – it shows my appreciation and admiration of their ability to bring a child into this world. I end the song kind of flexing a little about finally believing in myself again, and that’s also a shout-out to my mom for raising me correctly and equipping me with the necessary tools to become the best version of myself that I can be. The bonus track “Beautiful Bizarre” kind of shares the same theme as “Kimchi Pasta”, but it’s got more of a happy vibe to it. Kind of bouncy and really easy to listen to. It’s about all the good things that happen when someone is infatuated with another person; I left all the negative stuff out.”
