I know most of us Dexter fans are still reeling from last night’s series finale. I know that the episode was crazy, emotional and extremely confusing.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered from Deadline, that former show runner Clyde Phillips took some time out to let us fans know that last night’s ending was not what he had in my mind for the series finale. I warn you now; there are spoilers from last night’s episode featured in this article. If you haven’t seen the episode, then you need to read at your own risk.
The Emmy award winning series from the Showtime Network said farewell to us last night with Dexter faking his own death and starting a new life, completely and utterly alone. Clyde Phillips recently told E! Online that he actually had a much different ending in mind, back when he still ran the series.
Phillips said “In the very last scene of the series, Dexter wakes up. And everyone is going to think ‘Oh, it was a dream’, and the camera pulls back and back and back and then we realize no, it’s not a dream. Dexter’s opening his eyes and he’s on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. They just start to administer the drugs and he looks out through the window to the observation gallery, and in the gallery are all the people Dexter killed.”
Phillips also stated that many of Dexter’s victims, like Doakes (Erik King) and Trinity (Emmy award winner John Lithgow) would come back to haunt him. Phillips added that “Everything we’ve seen over the past eight seasons has happened in the several seconds from the time they start Dexter’s execution to the time they finish the execution and he dies. Literally, his life flashed before his eyes as he was about to die. I think it would have been a great, epic, very satisfying conclusion.”
I personally, would have loved that ending! Clyde Phillips chose to leave the series back in season four, one of the highest rated seasons of Dexter. Phillips stated that he thought “The current production team did a good job with the final episode.” He followed up his statement, insistent: “I chose not to stay with the show, and so everybody did what they did, and I had no problem with that.”
What do you think Dexter fans? Were you truly content with last night’s ending, or do you think that Clyde Phillips alternate ending would have been a better way to go?
