Days of Our Lives, one of the longest scripted television programs in the world, is about to hit another milestone! It will be the first to air a gay wedding between two men in soap opera history.
The nuptials of beloved characters Will Horton (Guy Wilson) and Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) will begin this Tuesday and will stretch over three episodes. To top it off, the ceremony will be officiated by the iconic Diedre Hall, who has played Days of Our Lives mainstay Dr. Marlena Evans for the past 35 years.
Speaking to The Advocate, Hall has shared what she thought the audience should take from storyline, “We live in a world where any love is a lucky thing to find, and if you can find it with a person with whom you’re compatible and you trust, lucky you. I celebrate anyone who has found a wonderful, sustaining love.”
When Will Horton first came out, the love and support of his grandmother Dr. Marlena Evans made a deep impact on the lives of viewers. A fact that Hall can attest, “For months after Will’s coming out, I can’t remember a time where I went out and wasn’t stopped by some darling young man saying things like, ‘You saved me,’ or ‘I didn’t know how to tell my parents [and because of this show] I was able to tell them.”
We hope these characters will have a long prosperous life together, and will continue to inspire member of the LGBT community for years to come!
