It seems most people clamor over the first editions of Superman or Spiderman. Scotland though has one that tops them all, the world’s oldest comic book.
Reports are saying The Glasgow Looking Glass will be unveiled as a major part of the International Graphic Novel and International Bande Dessinee Society Joint Conference 2013 held at Glasgow University this week.
The first ever, and now famous comic, later became The Northern Looking Glass, has a strong focus on the fashions and politics of 19th century Scotland.
Conference organizer Dr. Laurence Grove commented, “Work being presented at the conference shows that not only is Scotland, and particularly Glasgow, right at the forefront of the comic book industry today, but it has been so throughout history.”
He then said, “By hosting major events such as this we are really helping to reconceptualise comic books. We’re changing the cultural canon in a way.”
How awesome would it be to say you have the first comic book ever?!
