Xena: Warrior Princess Reboot In The Works

NBC is working on a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot, and are currently looking for a writer. But what about bringing back Lucy Lawless?

Ready your leather, Xena fans, as she may be kicking ass once more.

Rumour has it that a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot is in the works, and that leading actress Lucy Lawless would be happy to reprise the role.

The internationally successful show ran from 1995 to 2001 and followed the tales of Xena, a warrior princess who battled injustice from both humans and non-humans, with her companion Gabrielle.

Producers at NBC Universal International are currently looking for a writer to bring the show back from the past, but it will once again come from original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi. The project is in early development stages. There is no news yet of whether Lawless will reprise her role, or will play another character on the show—hopefully the former rather than the latter. Lucy Lawless made that show—but the actress is very interested in returning to the world both on-screen and behind the scenes.

The show would have a limited run, much like Fox’s recent reboot of 24 and the upcoming X-Files mini series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, insiders say the hope is for the new Xena to be an ongoing series.

While it seems to be focused on bringing a new Xena in to try to fill Lawless’ shoes—impossible, I say—the show is being helmed by the same producers who are hoping to capture Lawless’ charisma with the smarts of more modern-day heroines, to make the series fresh.

Lucy Lawless has kept herself busy since the series ended in 2001, having made appearances in Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Parks and Recreation, as well as having a starring stint in Salem and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. She will also star in the upcoming Ash vs. the Evil Dead with Bruce Campbell.

However, she would love to go back to her warrior princess ways.

She recently spoke about rebooting the show through crowd-funding with fans, and said “I’ve been pitching that, actually. The fans really do want that, and I’ve met some people who’ve crowd-funded some things, and I’m just like, Why don’t we just do that?

The cult favourite drama was sure to be offered a reboot treatment, particularly in light of its syndication and favour with fans.

Let’s just hope they don’t mess it up, a

nd that they bring back Lucy Lawless.

NBC hope for a 2016 start date for the drama.

So Popwrappers, are you ready for the Warrior Princess? Let us know.
