The future of the Jack Ryan films has recently been up in the air after the newest film, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, failed to earn a new generation of fans. The Tom Clancy character the films are based on has been featured in five films, the newest incarnation played by Star Trek hunk, Chris Pine. The film opened over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, and earned a meek 18 million in the United States. We are now learning that a majority of the audience was over 50, and a whopping 63% were over the age of 35. While age doesn’t necessarily determine a films success, studio execs must have hoped the A-list actor could resonate with younger viewers. Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore recently told Hollywood Reporter, “The affection for the franchise was definitely 50-plus. The young audience didn’t turn out for the opening weekend. The question now becomes, does a younger audience now discover it, whether in theaters or on home entertainment?”

The film has managed to perform decently overseas which can help push a movie to sequel territory if the studio finds they’ve made enough back, and profit of course. As of now, in the worldwide box office the new film has reached $40 million in profit on a $60 million budget. It’s safe to assume the movie will at least break even, if not make a modest profit. The Kenneth Branagh reboot also stars Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley.
