Zayn Malik is taking us back to the days of his youth for an unexpected Mind of Mine album cover, and he is FINALLY performing "Pillow Talk." Just kidding about the second part...
Zayn Malik has made his first official promotional appearance for his upcoming album release, and it was full of surprises! The former One Direction member is making his solo debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon after canceling a string of promotional appearances in the days after releasing his single "Pillow Talk."
It may have been a belated debut, but Zayn more than made up for the cancellations by surprising fans with a lot of new content.
Zayn alerted fans to tune in to the appearance earlier today, promising that he had a surprise planned for the show... Little did we know that we were in for TWO surprises.
May have a surprise for you on the show tonight ?

Zayn's first surprise of the evening was to reveal the album cover of his soon to be released debut solo album Mind of Mine. The album is set to drop one year to the date after Malik went separate ways with the rest of One Direction, and it features a side of Zayn that we are not as familiar with...
The second surprise came during the performance segment of his appearance. Instead of promoting his chart topping release "Pillow Talk," Malik went in for the kill by surprising fans with a new track called "It's You" from Mind of Mine.
"It's You" is a moody and restrained R&B ballad, on which the crooner professes his love to a special someone over a lush instrumental. Dressed in a floor length jacket with his pink hair on display Zayn served an emotional performance of the single. His voice soars to it's upper reaches of his falsetto, as the former boybander pledges that his feelings are true regardless of how quiet he may seem. The performance resonated with conviction, and it is definitely an interesting if less immediately absorbing song from the first listen.
Take a look at his first solo performance below!
It now sounds like Mind of Mine is gearing up to be a pretty strong and diverse compilation! Performing a new single is an interesting promotional move seeing as "Pillow Talk" could have benefited from the promo (it suffered a pretty severe drop from the top of the charts to the number 7 position), but it's fantastic to hear new music from Zayn regardless!
All in all, we'd say that Zayn's solo debut was a pretty solid success! The crooner seemed a little nervous, but that's to be expected. Given time we'd imagine that Zayn will hit the upper reaches of his potential, and this is definitely a step in the right direction.
