The Vampire Diaries began as the story of Elena Gilbert falling in love with Stefan Salvatore, a seemingly normal high school guy. The pair, played by Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley, respectively, did not have the easiest love story, as Elena moved on to Stefan’s brother, Damon Salvatore. Enter Ian Somerhalder as the bad boy who sometimes does good as her next beau. This show followed the CW’s classic love triangle tale, but it shocked all of its fans when Elena was put into a permanent state of sleep. Dobrev has not filmed new material for the show (other than voice work) since 2015.
As the show airs its final season, which will hopefully tie together the many stories from throughout the years, executive producer Julie Plec’s goal is to end this show the best way possible. And the only way to truly do that is to bring Elena back at least one more time, as she is where the show began all the way back in 2009.
Nina Dobrev announced her return via Instagram, which set the fandom on fire with excitement. Will her return mean a reunion of Delena, or will she only show up long enough to say her goodbyes? The context of her return remains unknown for now, but we are willing to bet this finale will have a very high viewership, as every fan — those who have watched and left, those who’ve been committed the whole time, and those just merely curious — will all tune in to see how Elena Gilbert’s story ends.
