Halloween has reared its ugly pumpkin head once again, so it’s up to us to make sure that you lovely PopWrapped readers have all the information you require to get well and truly scared this holiday season.
It is for this reason that I present to you: The five most spine-chilling, blood-curdling, eerie as hell scenes from the most unnerving show on television, American Horror Story.
If you make it through all five of these scenes then you are braver than you look. I have just watched all 27 episodes at once so that I could make this list. Can we just take a second to pray for my soul? I swear Bloody Face is hiding somewhere near me right now.
Apologies for the lack of vids! YouTube has failed me… But I’ve listed the episodes and provided images and GIFs where possible so you’ll get the gist. You can save the vids for Halloween!
#5 Tate’s Reveal In “Piggy, Piggy”
The crazy high school shooting scene is a pretty freaky number five. First of all the subject matter is immediately terrifying because we hear about these things so often in the media that you can’t help but feel as though this scene could actually happen. Tate also wears scary skeleton makeup that certainly adds to the unease. Plus there’s the emotionless psycho element that makes Tate such a brilliant villain. Oh, and the whistling… All the Kill Bill inspired whistling…
The SWAT team descends on his bedroom after the shooting (because he apparently felt the need to go home for a catnap) and he’s shot shortly after giving this eerie hand gesture…
#4 Snack Time In “Piggy, Piggy”
The at first random (and gross) but then foreshadowing and freaky scene where Vivien eats raw pig brains in the Murder House. She’s pregnant with twins at the time and the maid feeds them to her cooked because “its good for the baby” but then Viv has a weird craving and just starts chowing down on the raw stuff. By the time the season ends, we realise her twins are the devil spawn of psycho-killer Tate, so it all comes full circle. One of the twins even winds up murdering his own babysitter at the ripe old age of three.
#3 Frankenbaby In “Open House”
The totally frightening scene where we realise that this monster who’s been plaguing us since the pilot of Murder House…
Actually began life as this…
We find out the truth during a scene where previous house owners, Nora and Dr Charles Montgomery open their front door to find their baby dismembered in a cardboard box. Nora later walks, grief-stricken, down into the basement, only to find her drug-addled doctor-husband stitching the dead baby back together again with random animal parts. Like Humpty Dumpty on crack. It ain’t pretty.
#2 Bloody Face In “I Am Anne Frank Pt. 2”
The disturbing, on so many levels, scene where Dr Thredson AKA serial skin peeler AKA Lana’s gay conversion therapist abducts her from Briarcliff Asylum and drops her into the creepy basement playroom. There he tries to force her to kiss her dead girlfriend’s corpse. Gross factor a billion. The real spine-chilling moment though is when he reveals that he pulled out Wendy’s teeth to make his new bloody face mask.
Thredson is terrifying mostly for the disturbing factor – and the skinning people alive factor – one of his most disturbing scenes came a couple of episodes later. In this creepy episode; he ties Lana to a bed frame, tries to skin her alive, calls her “mommy”, rapes her, and forces her to breastfeed him. Told ya he was a disturbing fellow. “The Origins of Monstrosity” is one crazy AHS episode.
#1 Nazi Experiments In “Nor’Easter”
The seriously grotesque scene where we discover that the Nazi Dr Arden has hideously disfigured one of Briarcliff’s patients, Shelley.
She went from this…
To this…
And then (not in the same scene but I thought you ought to know), this…
Seriously, the first time I saw that I totally had nightmares. It’s not exactly fun to watch the third time round, either.
And that brings us to the end, folks! Hope you feel a little more freaked out than you did before you read this Popaween special! Enjoy the candy-themed holiday next week. If you can. At least it won’t be pig brains.
And be sure to check out this week’s recap to see how AHS: Coven is creeping us all out this season!
