The National have contributed a new song titled “Lean” to the soundtrack for Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

The Brooklyn-based indie band’s frontman, Matt Berninger, revealed to NME that the song was originally titled “Dying Is Easy,” but the band was forced to change it because it was considered too “dark” for the film. Berninger explained: “The song almost didn’t make it because it was too dark for The Hunger Games soundtrack, which I thought was sort of funny because it’s about killing kids, I don’t know how a song can be darker than that? So we had to change the name of the song; I actually liked the name ‘Lean.’”

Despite the title change, Berninger admitted that he enjoyed the process. “It was a cool change from how we normally work on things – to write something for something else,” he said. “It was kind of a pressure release thing and it was fun, we really enjoyed it.”

The National are only the second band confirmed to appear on the soundtrack for the forthcoming sequel. British band Coldplay were the first announced with their song “Atlas,” which was released earlier this month. Other artists rumoured to be a part of the soundtrack include Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Rey.
