Nominations for the 56th Annual Tony Awards were announced this morning (April 29) at a special ceremony hosted by Lucy Lui (Elementary

and Jonathon Groff (Frozen
),
and judging by the amount of shock inclusions (and exclusions) in the list, this may be the most difficult to predict Tony Awards season in years.
Take for example the Best Musical race, which appears to be wide open, with none of the four nominees seeming to be a clear winner; Disney’s Aladdin will face off with Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, and musical revue After Midnight.
It’s more clear in the Best Revival of a Musical Category, however, where the lesser-known Violet seems to be a long shot, when compared with the Neil Patrick Harris-fronted Hedwig and The Angry Inch, and fan favorite Les Miserables.
However, the category to watch will be Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, where two queens of Broadway, Idina Menzel and Sutton Foster, will go head-to-head.
Other nominees include Bryan Cranston (All The Way), Chris O’Dowd (Of Mice and Men), Neil Patrick Harris (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Audra McDonald (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill), Kelli O’Hara (The Bridges of Madison County) and Stephen Fry (Twelfth Night).
