Infant Kayden Powell was found alive, one day after being snatched from his parents’ bedroom, at about 10:15 a.m. Friday, near a gas station on I-80 in West Branch, Iowa; 180 miles away from home.
The 6-day-old baby was found by West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan in a tote bag, swaddled in blankets outside the gas station in freezing weather.
“We’re all very fortunate this baby is alive,” said G.B. Jones, the FBI’s acting special agent in charge in Milwaukee at a news conference.
His mother, Brianna Marshall, 18, reported the baby missing at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday. Kristen Rose Smith, a 31-year-old half-sister to the baby’s mother, was accused of kidnapping the child after she left the house at 1.30 a.m. on the same day the baby was found missing, to drive home to Denver, Colorado.
