Barbra Streisand is a legend. Period. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Her voice is legendary, her roles are iconic, and she is the center of every Broadway-wannabe’s fantasy. But she’s also incredibly outspoken about causes that are close to her heart.
On Monday, Babs was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy from Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. While she was accepting this great honor, she condemned Orthodox Jews for their overall treatment of women.
“It’s distressing to read about women in Israel being forced to sit in the back of a bus or… having metal chairs hurled a them when they intend to peacefully and legally pray,” Streisand lectured. “Or women being banned from singing in public ceremonies.”
The Hello, Dolly star meant to show her support for the recent feminist protests that are fighting for women to be permitted to pray alongside their male counterparts at the Western Wall; a place where men, exclusively, have frequented for many centuries so that they may worship and read the Torah (a book of Jewish written law).
“I know that solutions don’t come easy,” Streisand admitted. “And they don’t in the United States, where women are still making 80 cents for every dollar that a man makes.”
On top of picking up her honorary PhD in philosophy, Babs is slated to perform two live shows in Tel Aviv, as well as a performance at Shimon Peres’, Israeli’s President, birthday party.
