In a recent interview with Digital Spy, English alternative rock band Placebo talked about David Bowie, social media, and making their new album.
“If Bowie can make a record in complete anonymity without anybody knowing about it and without it being leaked and without it coming out and surprise everybody the way that he did…then I think there’s hope for us, there really, really is…Well done, David,” lead singer Brian Molko said about Bowie’s latest album, The Next Day.
Bowie released the project, his first studio album in 10 years, in March. It t debuted at number one on the UK albums chart.
Molko relates to Bowie because they’re both very private people. He has strong opinions on social media and its dominant role in the world today. That’s one of the themes that he and his band address in their album, Loud Like Love.
“I’m not too sure that [social media’s] actually bringing us all together. I’m not too sure that it’s not actually creating a new form of social alienation. People don’t call each other on the phone anymore and have real conversations. As a consequence, I’m a very private person. I don’t social network,” Molko said. He has neither a Facebook nor a Twitter account, a rarity in musicians nowadays.
A track on the album, entitled “Too Many Friends”, centers around the social media conundrum.
On their new music, drummer Steve Forrest said, “…things get very dark…they get darker and darker as the album progresses. Being Placebo, we were always going to explore themes of obsession and jealousy and heartbreak and absence of love and how addiction can tear people apart.”
Yahoo Music reports that Molko has called Loud Like Love their most honest and vulnerable record so far.
“It’s a byproduct of becoming very comfortable with who we are…Each album has a different tone to it. This album brings all of it together. It showcases what we do best, which is emotional music that’s very human and fragile,” Molko said of their seventh project.
With new music out there, Placebo are prepared to perform in the States again for the first time in six years.
The upcoming U.S. dates are Terminal 5 in NYC (October 15th) and The Wiltern in Los Angeles (October 19th).
Overseas dates kick off on November 12th in Warsaw, Poland.
