British Army Extracts WWII Bomb From Wembley Stadium Site

A bomb believed to date back to WWII was discovered at the site of Wembley Stadium this week, later removed by the British army.

Explosive experts from the British army have removed and safely detonated a World War II German bomb found near London’s Wembley Stadium.

Workers unearthed the device while doing construction near the stadium yesterday (May 21). Investigators believe the 50kg explosive, identified as a Luftwaffe Sprengbombe-Cylindrisch general purpose bomb, may have been dropped as part of a Nazi air raid in the early 1940s.

Police evacuated around 300 people from surrounding residences and businesses during the removal process. The studio where

Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Mickey Gallagher told press:

“Although it doesn’t seem like a massive bomb… It does pose a very real threat.”

The bomb was transported to a controlled location in Bedfordshire, England today, where it was detonated. An engineering team also erected a blast wall around the detonation site as an extra precaution.

The Wembley bomb is the second un-exploded World War II device to be found in London in recent months. In March of this year, a 250kg bomb was found in the Bermondsey district. That device was also removed and disposed of without incident.
