This is no joke. Well…it started with a joke. The new meme popping up on Tumblr dashboards across the globe is about Tom Holland, and it is not related to his role in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
On July 27th, Tumblr user opposume posted this strange observation about Tom Holland:
The post is currently boasting over 100,000 notes, spurring a hyperbolic, joke-based theory that Tom Holland is secretly hiding a frog inside his mouth.
There has been no mercy for Tom Holland with this new meme.
People have wondered about the nature of their relationship with terms found in a high school biology class:
They’ve connected it to past Spider-Mans (warning: there is explicit language in this post):
This post jokingly explaining that the frog is controlling him:
And this connecting the two theories into an off the wall conspiracy theory:
Tumblr users have even extended the joke to Donald Trump Jr:
There has even been fandom crossover, in which the One Direction fans (who often joke about Harry Styles being an alien or frog) made their own hypothesis about Tom’s frog:
On top of that, this meme has crossed over with other popular previously existing memes, such as this one which makes fun of the wording of spam online ads:
This one which originally made fun of how straight couples ask gay couples who is the “man” and “women” of the relationship and has since devolved into chaos:
It’s spread to such an extent that when you Google “Tom Holland” this is he second result Google suggests:
Oh, and Tom Holland’s frog has a name: Dave
The Marvel fandom quickly accepted this name proposal. Someone even made a Tumblr account answering messages as if they are Dave:
Now, do these Tumblr users really think Tom Holland has a frog in his mouth? No, they just take their humor to another level. However, Tobey Maguire controlling the new Spider-Man may explain why this third portrayal of the super hero was arguably the best yet; he had experienced help!
Good old, Tumblr, right? We can’t help but wonder if Tom knows about this meme…does he find it as hilarious as the rest of us?
