Giddy Marvel fans all over the country probably tuned in to
‘ABC on Tuesday night for Agents of S.H.I.EL.D., and the ratings confirm it.
The show follows an organization of skilled agents, tied to the world already glimpsed in popular Marvel blockbusters, led by Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).
Nearly 12 million viewers (11.9 to be exact) showed their support for Marvel’s new series starring Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, and Chloe Bennet, among others. It also received a 4.6 demo rating for viewers ages 18-49.
Entertainment Weekly reports that it’s the…wait for it…highest-rated TV drama debut in almost four years, calling its ratings a “Hulk smash”. (That reference made you chuckle, let’s be real.)
Will Marvel wonders never cease? Not that we want them to.
Its success is especially impressive given the competition that it was up against.
Both The Voice on NBC and NCIS on CBS shared the 8 PM time slot with Agents, and they’re two of the most popular TV shows out there right now. Agents and The Voice tied in demo rating, but the former beat NCIS’ 3.4 rating. The crime drama, despite scoring its lowest demo rating so far, brought in nearly 20 million viewers.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Agents’ co-creator Joss Whedon said, “I mean, I want it to be a hit because people who I work for have invested in it, and people I work with are in it, and writing it, and I want it to continue.”
Whedon, known already for his continuing work on the Avengers film franchise, created the TV series with younger brother Jed and writer Maurissa Tancharoen.
According to CNN, critics haven’t been overly enthusiastic about Agents. Most have expressed it as a “promising start”, although they also believe it dwarfs in comparison to the film franchises. Even comments on CNN’s website haven’t been too positive.
Only time will tell if the agents continue to enjoy TV success.
