ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Co-Founder Corey Griffin Drowns At Age 27

Young philanthropist and ALS Ice Bucket Challenge co-founder Corey Griffin drowned as a result of a tragic diving accident Saturday August 16th, 2014.

Over these past few weeks, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been taking the world by storm. The challenge was originally co-founded by young philanthropist Corey Griffin, who was inspired to get fundraising for ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, to go viral after finding out that his friend Pete Frates was diagnosed.

Unexpectedly and tragically, it has been announced that Griffin had passed away following a diving accident off of the Nantucket coast. Reportedly, Griffin had dived from the top of Juice Guys on Saturday, August 16 at 2:00am, surfacing once after hitting the water but being pulled under by the waves thereafter. Griffin had died mere hours after performing yet another miracle representative of his life’s work, having raised up to $100,000 towards amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at a fundraiser nearby.

His Ice Bucket Challenge had become an unexpectedly humongous success, prompting celebrities from across the globe to get in on the fun while donating some cash to a good cause. Some of the most notable challenge videos thus far include contributions from Charlie Sheen, Derek Jeter, and Ryan Higa.

We at PopWrapped extend our condolences to the Corey’s family and friends during this time of mourning. In his wake, let us remember that his actions have contributed towards one day saving countless lives.
