We’ve heard a lot of new things about the television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods.  Well, prepare for more! Exclusive information has been released from Starz, naming Bryan Fuller and Michael Green as the main showrunners for the new drama.

Ladies and gentemen, #CastingShadow has begun!

The dramatic adaptation is being produced by FremantleMedia North America (FMNA), based on the acclaimed fantasy novel.

Now, I am in the middle of reading this novel, and let me tell you: if the series is anything like the book, I will be totally on board. The weaving between modern representation of the gods and their prime moments of power is absolutely fantastic.

Fuller and Green, known for their work on Hannibal,Pushing Daisies, and Heroes and The River, Kings, and Heroes, respectively, will be penning the show, while Gaiman himself will be an executive producer.

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said, “STARZ is committed to bring American Gods to its legions of fans. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil guiding the project, we hope to create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans, who have been casting it in their minds for years.  The search for Shadow begins today!”

Can I just say, exciting things are happening!

Gaiman chimed in about how thrilled he is to be a part of the project. He’s also “scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I’m relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura…”

Fuller compared the project and its titular novel to a toy box, saying how they are all thrilled to finally be opening it up and bringing the world of gods and magic to life. “We’re grateful to have STARZ above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise.”

The 2011 beloved fantasy has been translated into over 30 languages and has earned numerous awards. Centered around a battle between the traditional gods of myth and legend who are losing believers, and the new gods of greed and consumerism. The main character, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who is hired to be a bodyguard for one of the gods by the chosen name of Mr. Wednesday.
