Arrow Hero Oliver Queen Gets a Mask

Staff Writer

After one and half seasons, the hero of The CW’s Arrow, Oliver Queen, is finally to don a mask.

The billionaire-playboy-turned-superhero’s new costume addition is said to be a symbol of Oliver’s progression into more of a hero, though executive producer Andrew Kreisberg has also admitted that adding the mask was logical. As Oliver becomes more of a recognisable hero, protecting his true identity becomes more important, leading the production team to the addition of the mask.

Whilst a logical move, however, deciding on the mask was by no means an easy task for the Arrow team. With over 50 masks being suggested by costume designer Maya Mani, the team finally decided on a simple eye mask.

Kreisberg has also said that the mask had been considered even before the pilot episode, but they chose to avoid it for fear of seeming clichéd or silly. With the mask now seemingly essential, it has been written into the show with an important plot line; the mask is to be provided by another character.

Whilst this costume addition may be controversial amongst some fans, it will finally allow Oliver to take on adversaries without having to hide his face in the shadows, something which should please any Stephen Amell fans.

The freshly-masked alter-ego of Oliver Queen will first feature in “Three Ghosts,” to be shown on December 11.
