The Avengers, Star Wars Get 16th Century Makeover

“What if Wolverine was born in the sixteenth century?”
“And what if the Hulk was a Duke?”
“How might Van Eyck have portrayed Alice?”

These are the questions asked by French photographer Sacha Goldberger, and the results are spectacular.

Goldberger debuted his series at the Super Flemish School Gallery’s Paris Photo booth last week. The series features a variety of pop culture icons, including the Hulk and Captain America re-imagined in the style of the 16th century, creating a truly unique effect.

On his site, Goldberger states that “As science fiction meets history of art, time meets an inexhaustible desire for mythology which is within each of us.”

Perhaps the most impressive aspect is it’s not only the outfits, but also the composition of the pieces, which are set in the style of the Flemish masters of that era. This contrast between modern subjects and classical style makes for some truly stunning, and often hilarious, pieces (C-3PO in a cape and wrist ruffles is particularly tremendous).
