Its a sad day for comedy, as the supremely beloved British comedian Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56.
Mayall, who starred in iconic shows such as The Young Ones and Blackadder, died suddenly this afternoon at his home in Barnes, London. His representatives, Brunskill, released a statement stating: “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rik Mayall who passed away this morning. We will be issuing a further statement in the fullness of time.”
Mayall was one of the pioneers of British alternative comedy, but he also had some flirtations with Hollywood. He earned the part of Peeves in the first Harry Potter film (although his scenes were cut at the last minute) and was on the shortlist to portray Captain Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.
There is no cause of death known just yet.
Our thoughts go out to Rik’s family, friends and legions of fans all around the world.
