We finally have confirmation on a Freddy Mercury.

Rumours have been swirling since Sacha Baron Cohen pulled out of the as yet untitled Mercury biopic, and now Deadline confirms that James Bond’s new Q, Ben Whishaw, will be putting on the famous ‘stache and starring as the Queen frontman.

They are also reporting that actor/director Dexter Fletcher (Press Gang, Wild Bill) will be directing the feature. Fletcher has just finished working on Sunshine on Leith, a musical based around the music of The Proclaimers. Sources claim that “Fletcher has been meeting the band and getting a feel for the Queen story, and that the intention is for the movie to get up and running next year regardless of whether Sony steps up”.

The film initially was to look at Mercury’s life and death. However, new reports suggest a change in focus and the film will instead centre of his formative years with the band’s headline performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert ending the film on a high note. This performance is considered one of rock’s all-time great concert appearances.

While Mercury’s death from AIDS-related complications in 1991 helped de-stigmatise the disease, the film will not deal with this aspect of his life.

Peter Morgan is writing the screenplay. No distributor has signed on as yet, though Sony Pictures are in negotiations.
