Straight from the actor’s mouth. Benedict Cumberbatch has told Conan O’brien in an interview that he has been leaving messages on JJ Abrams voicemail in the hopes of receiving a role for Star Wars Episode 7. But, before we all start fawning over a potential new Jedi savior or Sith overlord, this may not be the dream role we’ve envisioned for him.

Cumberbatch stated that, while in the midst of leaving the voicemails, he would pretend to be a lightsaber. “Yeah, it started with me with sort of… I just sort of would leave casual messages on his phone as a lightsaber,” Cumberbatch explained. “I thought he thought he was getting bad cell reception or something.”

As crucial of an element a lightsaber is to the Star Wars universe, and as confident as I am that, if anyone could master the role of an inanimate object, Benedict could; I still think he can aim a little bit higher. Maybe an Ewok or something.

Even if he doesn’t ultimately end up in a faraway galaxy from a long time ago, there’s plenty of Benedict to go around; The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is currently in theaters and, come January, he and fellow Hobbit co-star Martin Freeman return to the small screen in Sherlock.
