In case you’ve missed the big casting news, Ben Affleck has been tapped to play Batman in the 2015 Man of Steel sequel. Since Christian Bale stepped down from the role, other names have been mentioned for the role including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and Teen Wolf’s Tyler Hoechlin. So it definitely came as a shock to many fans of the caped crusader especially since the Argo star didn’t seem to appear on any list of the potential contenders.

Ever since the news has hit airwaves, many people have had mixed emotions about the casting, however the overwhelming emotion seems to be anger. Although it’s clear that Affleck does have star quality as seen in the award-winning film Argo, many people feel that there are better choices for Bruce Wayne.

Fans are so disappointed with the casting they have resorted to making an online petition requesting that Warner Bros. Studios recast Batman and remove Ben Affleck from the film. John Roden, one fan who was clearly upset, creating the petition a few days ago.

While Roden mentions Affleck’s build, I think it’s safe to say that Affleck can bulk up. Christian Bale did, Affleck is capable of doing so too. While Roden also brought up Affleck’s past flop Daredevil, he updated the post stating:  “I would like to add that this petition was not meant in any way to harm Ben Affleck or his career. I respect Affleck’s work, I just feel he is inappropriate for the role.” Over 61,000 people seem to agree with Roden.

Aside from the petition, one of the top trending topics on Twitter concerning the casting news is #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck. Twitter users have been throwing out random names including Meryl Streep and Spongebob Squarepants’ Mermaid Man and most want Bale to return.

I wonder how Ben Affleck, Man of Steel director Zack Snyder and the people at Warner Bros. feel about the uproar they’ve caused. Maybe Affleck will prove all the haters wrong. We’ll just have to wait and see.
