If anyone had doubts about Beyonce’s groundbreaking move to release an entire album with no pre-promotion or fanfare; please sit back and revel in the results of Queen Bey’s surprise move.
According to The Huffington Post, Beyonce’s self-titled album has become the fastest selling album on iTunes ever. It also smashed through sales records by selling a massive 828,773 copies over the three day weekend; over 600k of those copies were domestic sales.
Compared to previous record holder, Taylor Swift, with sales for her album Red topping off at 465,000 for the last week of October, Beyonce’s sales numbers are astounding. Billboard reported that the album sold over 80,000 copies within the first few hours with album sales boosted by no individual song sales.
As we previously reported, Beyonce’s risky move was motivated by a desire to steer away from the conventional promotion cycle, “I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it,” she said. “I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”
