We all know Yoshi: cute little green dinosaur guy who can eat you up and make eggs out of you. Well, what if we told you he wasn’t really named Yoshi? According to Polygon, our beloved dinosaur’s real name is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas.
Of course, if you didn’t own or have access to a copy of a Nintendo Character Guide from 1993, you probably would not have known that. Recent Twitter activity from Console Wars creator Blake Harris brought the publication’s contents to light.
“Yoshi, properly known as T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, had been held captive in an egg until Mario (homo nintendonus) bopped along and rescued him. Instantly, the young dinosaur and the plumber became fast friends. Together, they set out to rescue Yoshi’s dinosaur pals from the wickedness of Bowser.”
Mario’s own scientific name brings other questions to light, like what else has Nintendo been hiding from us? Is Princess Peach really a princess? Is Zelda really able to change into a man, or is she simply channeling Mulan?
Like so many of us, Polygon wants to know! In an effort to satisfy their curiosity and ours, they’ve reached out to Nintendo of America to find out the truth.
