When U2 teamed up with Apple to treat users with the surprise release of an album, Songs Of Innocence, it probably seemed like a good idea. However, iOS users did not quite embrace it, as they got an album they didn’t ask for stuck in their iTunes library. Now frontman Bono decided to pen an apology for the inconvenience.
During a recent Facebook Q&A, Bono shared his apology with fans. He stated that U2 got carried away with the idea, because they were afraid people wouldn’t hear the music they worked hard on if it was casually released. It seems the band is aware that people did not appreciate what they did to their playlists and won’t be doing it ever again.
One way or another, it does not really matter whether the apology comes from a place of honesty or not. The deal U2 made with Apple got them $100 million anyway and the case is now closed. Revisiting a marketing plan that obviously did not work out will definitely be avoided in the future, so users will most probably not be bothered ever again in the same way. Whatever the case, it’s nice to see he’s aware of the situation.
