Following the sad loss of Unit Chief Erin Strauss at the hands of Mark Hamill’s Replicator in the Season Finale, the BAU was leaderless. However CBS have just announced that they have cast Strauss’ replacement. Esai Morales will be playing new Unit Chief Matt Cruz as a recurring character.

New Unit Chief Cruz is being described as a longtime FBI agent who is promoted to head up the BAU, and as the season progresses we will discover he has had a previous professional relationship with AJ Cook’s JJ. Will the fans discover more of what JJ did when she worked away from the BAU? It will be very interesting to see what sort of relationship Cruz will have with the team, as Strauss (Jayne Atkinson) had quite the antagonist relationship with the BAU.
Morales will make his debut in Episode 3 of the new season which will also star David Anders as the lobotomising “unsub”.
Esai Morales is no stranger to crime dramas, having previously starred in hit dramas such as NYPD: Blue and Law and Order : SVU. It is going to be a busy year for the star as he is currently in contention for SAG-AFTRA’s inaugural solo President. Check out his video and message here:
