Things got real for Gus Poyet, former Brighton & Hove Albion football club manager, during the live coverage of a Confederation Cup match on the BBC. Just forty-five minutes into the broadcast on Sunday 23 June, production staff in the studio handed Poyet a printed copy of the club’s official statement saying that he was to be let go immediately. Poyet insisted that he had no communication with the club regarding the subject prior to his abrupt dismissal.

Poyet, a former Uruguayan international player, had been with the club since 2009. Most recently he had been under suspension pending inquiry over an apparent breach of contract. During his suspension he had been unable to contact any of his players or coaching staff. Poyet plans on seeking legal council and appealing the firing saying that both the team and players “gave him so much“ and made him very proud.
